What Impex fixes in Cary

Every piece of glass on the car, handled where the car is parked

Cary auto glass work comes in eight kinds. Pick the one that sounds like yours, or call and describe the damage: a chip from a truck on I-40, a crack running in from the edge, a door window smashed in a parking lot, or a camera warning after a new windshield.

Impex Auto Glass has no shop in Cary. Its shops are in Greensboro and Charlotte, and the work in Cary is done by its mobile service at your home, your office or wherever the car sits. How that visit works, what the technician needs and when a shop visit is the better call are on the page about mobile windshield replacement in Cary.

How a mobile visit works

From the first call to driving away

Four steps, most of them in your own driveway.

  1. Call or send the form

Say what is damaged, which car it is and where in Cary it is parked. If you have the VIN, have it ready: it is on the driver’s side of the dashboard and on your insurance card.

  2. The right glass is ordered

Impex checks the part against your VIN before the visit is booked, so the glass that arrives fits your car’s camera bracket, sensors and trim.

  3. The van comes to you

The technician works on the car where it is parked: a driveway, a garage, an office lot. The old glass is cut out, the frame is cleaned and the new glass is set in urethane.

  4. Calibrate, cure, drive

Where the car has a forward camera, it is calibrated. Impex’s guidance for a windshield is about an hour for the work plus a short wait for the adhesive to set before you drive.

Insurance in North Carolina

How a glass claim usually works in NC

In North Carolina, broken glass falls under the comprehensive part of a car policy. The NC Department of Insurance lists “Breakage of glass” among the losses comprehensive coverage pays for, “less any deductible”. NC has no law that waives the deductible for glass, so your comprehensive deductible applies unless your own policy says otherwise. Some policies carry full glass coverage, so it is worth checking yours.

You choose the shop. Under NC law (G.S. 58-3-180) a policy covering damage to a motor vehicle must let you pick the repair service, and the insurer pays the same amount whichever one you choose. An insurer that recommends a shop has to tell you that you are under no obligation to use it.

A comprehensive glass claim is not an at-fault accident, so it does not add NC Safe Driver Incentive Plan points. Your insurer may still look at how often you file claims. Impex says it works with all major insurance providers and can handle the claim with your insurer for you. The full walk-through is on the insurance claims page.

ADAS calibration

The camera behind your mirror after a new windshield

Many cars sold in Cary now carry a forward camera at the top of the windshield. It feeds lane departure warning, collision braking and adaptive cruise control. I-CAR, the collision repair training body, lists removing the windshield as one of the events that may require that camera to be aimed again.

There are two ways to do it. Static calibration sets targets in front of the parked car while a scan tool runs the aiming routine. Dynamic calibration drives the car on the road at a set speed for a set time or distance, which needs dry roads and steady traffic. Some cameras need both. Impex says it performs camera calibration on site straight after the windshield goes in, and that calibration takes between 30 minutes and 2 hours.

If your car needs a static target setup that a driveway cannot give, or the roads are wet for a dynamic drive, Impex will say so when you book. The ADAS camera calibration page explains which cars need it, and the ADAS radar calibration page covers the radar in the front bumper.

Repair or replace

When a chip can be filled and when the glass has to go

The repair standard used across the industry, ROLAGS, says stone breaks up to two inches across and single line cracks up to 14 inches are repairable. Impex’s own rule of thumb is that damage which is small, shallow and away from the edges can usually be repaired, and that a chip smaller than a quarter is a good candidate.

Where the damage sits matters as much as its size. A crack that runs to the edge of the glass, damage deep in the layers, or a break right in front of the driver usually means a new windshield. Impex’s own advice is that timely windshield repair helps prevent a costly replacement, so the sooner a chip is looked at, the more options there are. Windshield repair in Cary covers sizes, timing and what the resin can and cannot do, and windshield replacement in Cary covers the full replacement visit.

The Cary roads

Where Cary windshields get hit

Cary sits on I-40, US 1 and US 64, NC 54 and NC 55, with the NC 540 Triangle Expressway along its western side and Cary Parkway looping through town. NC 540 is a toll road run by the NC Turnpike Authority, and the Complete 540 project is extending it from the NC 55 Bypass in Apex toward Knightdale: the first 18 miles to I-40 and US 70 opened on September 25, 2024, and the second phase is scheduled to finish in 2028.

Highway speeds, new road surfaces and work zones all throw stones. NC law (G.S. 20-116(g)) requires trucks over 7,500 pounds carrying rock or gravel to keep the load six inches below the walls and covered with a tarpaulin, because loose stone off a load is a hazard to everyone behind it. When something does hit, a chip is cheaper to fix than a windshield, so it pays to call early. Glass on a car that is not the windshield is covered on the auto glass repair in Cary page.

Questions

Questions Cary drivers ask

Short answers here, longer ones on the questions page.

Is there an Impex shop in Cary?

No. Impex Auto Glass has shops in Greensboro and Charlotte. In Cary the work is done by Impex’s mobile service, which comes to your home, office or parking space. Cary Windshield is that mobile service’s site.

Do I get a free windshield replacement in NC?

Not by law. North Carolina has no zero-deductible glass law, so a glass claim under comprehensive coverage usually costs you your deductible. Some policies include full glass coverage, which can leave you nothing to pay. Check your policy, or ask Impex to look at it with you when you call. More on the insurance claims page.

Can a 12 inch crack in a windshield be repaired?

Sometimes. The ROLAGS repair standard says single line cracks up to 14 inches are repairable, but a crack that reaches the edge of the glass, or sits in front of the driver, usually means a new windshield. A technician has to see it. See windshield repair in Cary.

How long can I drive with a cracked windshield?

NC’s annual safety inspection checks your wipers, not the glass itself, and no NC law sets a crack size. But a crack in your line of sight is still a safety problem, and the windshield helps the airbags work and keeps people in the car in a crash. Cracks grow, so get it looked at soon.

How long does a windshield replacement take?

Impex’s guidance is about an hour for the work plus a short curing period, so most drivers are back on the road within two hours. Camera calibration, where your car needs it, takes 30 minutes to 2 hours more.

Do I have to use the shop my insurer suggests?

No. Under NC law (G.S. 58-3-180) you choose who repairs your vehicle, and the insurer pays the same amount whichever shop you pick.

What does the mobile visit need from me?

Somewhere the car can sit for a couple of hours, ideally a level spot such as a driveway or garage, and a dry day or some cover for a windshield. The mobile windshield replacement page has the details.

How much does a windshield replacement cost in Cary?

It depends on the glass your car takes, its sensors and camera, and whether insurance pays. Impex quotes each car by its VIN. The windshield replacement cost guide explains what moves the price.
