Back glass replacement in Cary, NC: rear windows replaced at your door

Back glass replacement in Cary is usually an unplanned morning: you walk out to the car and the rear window is in pieces across the back seat or the trunk. This page covers what to do first, why back glass is replaced rather than repaired, how Impex Auto Glass replaces it at your home or workplace, what happens to the rear defroster and what to avoid afterwards. Cary Windshield is a mobile service of Impex Auto Glass; Impex has no shop in Cary, so the van comes to where the car is.

Why rear window replacement, not repair

Your windshield is laminated glass and can take a resin repair. Back glass on most cars is tempered glass, made to break into small pieces instead of sharp shards. Impex’s guidance is direct: most of the time back glass cannot be safely repaired, because tempered glass shatters when it is damaged, so replacement is the safe and effective answer. A crack across a rear window is the pane on its way to breaking.

The back glass also carries the defroster: the thin lines across it that clear mist and frost. On many SUVs and hatchbacks the rear wiper is mounted on it too. When the glass goes, those parts have to be disconnected and reconnected with the new pane.

Tell Impex the car and the damage. Impex checks the glass against your VIN and comes back with a quote and a time.

What breaks back glass

Impex lists road debris, temperature changes, accidents and pressure changes in the cabin among the causes. In Cary that covers a stone thrown up on I-40 or NC 540, a branch in a storm, a minor rear-end bump in traffic on US 1 or US 64, or a break-in in a parking lot. Sometimes nobody sees it happen: the glass is simply broken in the morning.

What to do in the first hour

  • Do not drive with loose glass on the parcel shelf or seat backs. Pieces fall into the cabin when the car moves.
  • Keep children and pets out of the back until it is cleaned.
  • If rain is coming and the car is outside, cover the opening with plastic sheeting until the glass is replaced.
  • Photograph the damage, and if anything was taken or the car was vandalized, report it to the police. Impex’s insurance guide notes that glass claims rarely need a police report unless vandalism or theft occurred.
  • Call Impex with the year, make and model, and say whether the car has a rear wiper or any lines or sensors on the glass.

How back glass is replaced on a mobile visit

  1. The part is confirmed by VIN. Impex uses VIN-based verification before the visit is booked, so the glass that arrives has the right defroster connections and fittings for your car.
  2. The broken glass is cleared. What is left in the frame comes out, and the loose glass is cleaned out of the cabin, the parcel shelf, the trunk or cargo area.
  3. The frame is prepared. The old adhesive and trim are dealt with so the new pane seats and seals properly.
  4. The new back glass goes in. It is set in place and the trim is refitted.
  5. The defroster and electrics are reconnected and tested. Impex says its technicians take care to reconnect and test the rear defroster and any other electrical parts during the installation.
  6. Cure and aftercare. The adhesive needs time. You are told when the car can be driven and what to avoid for the first day.

Impex’s guidance is that back glass replacement takes about one to two hours, depending on the make and model. After it, avoid washing the car or using the rear defroster for 24 hours so the adhesive can cure.

Pickups, sliding rear windows and SUVs

Back glass is not one part. A pickup may have a fixed rear window, a sliding window in a frame, or a heated one. An SUV or hatchback may have the glass in a lift gate with a wiper, a washer jet and a third brake light near it. That is why the call matters: tell Impex the exact cab or body style and what is on the glass, and the VIN check takes care of the rest.

Rear window tint after a replacement

If the old back glass was tinted with film, the new glass will not carry that film. North Carolina’s tint rules in G.S. 20-127 require windows other than the windshield to let through at least 35 percent of light, with reflectance of 20 percent or less and no red, yellow or amber film. Multipurpose vehicles such as minivans and pickups have an exception for windows behind the driver. Since December 1, 2025 the annual safety inspection no longer checks tint, but the limits still apply on the road.

Whatever the tint, the glass itself must be safety glass. G.S. 20-135 makes it unlawful to knowingly drive an NC-registered car made on or after January 1, 1936 without safety glass wherever glass is used in its doors, windows, windshields, wings or partitions. A taped plastic sheet is a way home, not a fix.

Paying for back glass in North Carolina

Broken back glass is normally a comprehensive claim. The NC Department of Insurance lists breakage of glass among the losses comprehensive coverage pays, less any deductible, and North Carolina has no zero-deductible glass law. Impex’s insurance guide notes that the deductible usually applies to side and rear glass, so compare the quote with your deductible before you decide whether to claim.

You choose who replaces it. G.S. 58-3-180 says your policy must let you select the repair service, and the insurer pays the same amount whichever you choose. A glass claim is not an at-fault accident and adds no Safe Driver Incentive Plan points, though insurers can look at how often you claim. Impex says it works with all major insurance providers. See insurance claims for the steps.

Back glass and the rest of the car’s glass

If the same incident broke a door window too, both can be done on one visit: see side window replacement. For the full picture of glass that is not the windshield, see auto glass repair in Cary. If a rear-end bump also hit the front of the car, the radar behind the front bumper may need attention: see ADAS radar calibration. And if the windshield was hit as well, go to windshield replacement in Cary.

The van covers Cary and the towns around it: Apex, Morrisville and RTP, Holly Springs and Fuquay-Varina. How the visit works at home or at work is on the mobile windshield replacement page.
