Side window replacement in Cary covers the glass in your doors and the small fixed quarter glass beside or behind them. It is one of the quicker jobs Impex Auto Glass does: Impex’s guidance is about 30 to 60 minutes, and you can drive the car as soon as it is done. Cary Windshield is a mobile service of Impex Auto Glass. Impex has no shop in Cary, so the window is replaced where the car is parked, at home, at work or in a parking lot.

Does the side window need replacing?
Impex’s guidance is that a side window that is cracked, shattered or will not roll up or down properly likely needs to be replaced, and that even small cracks can compromise safety and should be looked at by a technician. Most door glass is tempered: it is made to break into small cubes rather than sharp pieces, which protects the people in the car but means the pane cannot be repaired with resin the way a windshield chip can. Once tempered glass is cracked, it is on its way to breaking.
Tell Impex the car and the damage. Impex checks the glass against your VIN and comes back with a quote and a time.
Front door, rear door, quarter glass
- Front and rear door windows wind up and down inside the door. When one breaks, most of the glass falls inside the door itself as well as onto the seat and the ground, so the clean-up is part of the job.
- Quarter glass is the small pane behind a rear door or in the rear pillar. It is usually fixed rather than moving, and it is often a different part from one trim level to the next.
- Vent windows on some trucks and older cars sit in front of the main door glass.
These parts differ between body styles and trim levels, even on the same model. Impex uses VIN-based verification so the right part is ordered before the visit is booked, which means the van arrives with glass that fits and the job gets done in one trip.
How a side window is replaced
- You call with the details. The car, which window, and where it is parked. Impex checks the part by VIN and books a time.
- The broken glass is cleared. The pieces left in the frame and the channel come out, and loose glass is cleaned off the seats, the floor and out of the door.
- The door is opened up. On a door window the inside panel usually has to come off to get to the glass and its mounting, and any glass inside the door is cleared at the same time.
- The new glass is fitted. The new pane goes in and the door panel and trim go back on.
- You drive away. Impex’s guidance is that, unlike a windshield, a side window needs no cure time before the car is driven.
If the window would not move before it broke, or the glass is whole but stuck, say so when you call. That is a different problem from broken glass, and Impex can tell you what the visit can and cannot cover.
Mobile side window replacement in Cary
Impex’s own answer to whether it offers mobile side window replacement is yes: its technicians replace side windows at your home, your office or wherever the vehicle is. Because there is no adhesive to cure on a door window, weather matters less than for a windshield, but rain getting into an open door is still worth avoiding: a garage, a parking deck or a dry spell helps. What the van needs and where it can work is on the mobile windshield replacement page.
Impex says its quotes are fully inclusive, with no hidden fees, delivery charges, fuel fees or disposal fees, so the clean-up and the trip to your driveway are in the price you are quoted.
After a break-in in Cary
Most smashed door windows in parking lots are break-ins. Before the van arrives, photograph the damage and anything taken, report a theft to the police, and if rain is coming, cover the opening with plastic sheeting. Do not reach in through the broken window. Impex’s insurance guide notes that glass claims rarely need a police report unless vandalism or theft occurred, which is exactly when your insurer may ask for one.
NC law expects the opening to be glazed. G.S. 20-135 makes it unlawful to knowingly drive an NC-registered car made on or after January 1, 1936 without safety glass wherever glass is used in its doors and windows. Plastic gets you home; it is not a repair.
Tint on a new door window
A new door window comes untinted unless the factory glass itself was tinted. If you re-tint it, G.S. 20-127 applies: at least 35 percent light transmission on windows other than the windshield (a meter reading over 32 percent is presumed to comply), reflectance of 20 percent or less, and no red, yellow or amber film. Minivans and pickups have an exception for windows behind the driver. Since December 1, 2025, tint is no longer checked at the annual safety inspection, but the limits still apply on the road. The new 20-127(g) also says a driver with tinted windows must roll down the driver’s window when a law enforcement officer approaches. The article on NC’s tint law and a new windshield has the full rules.
Side windows and driver assistance
Impex’s guidance is that ADAS recalibration is typically not needed after a side window replacement, because the forward camera that needs calibrating sits behind the windshield. Impex’s technicians still check the car’s safety systems. If the windshield was broken in the same incident, see windshield replacement in Cary and ADAS camera calibration.
Paying for a side window in North Carolina
Impex’s guidance is that most comprehensive auto policies cover side window damage. In NC, the Department of Insurance lists breakage of glass among the losses comprehensive coverage pays, less any deductible, and there is no zero-deductible glass law. Impex’s insurance guide notes the deductible usually applies to side and rear glass, so a side window that costs less than your deductible may be simpler to pay for directly. If you claim, you choose the shop under G.S. 58-3-180, and a glass claim adds no Safe Driver Incentive Plan points. More on insurance claims.
