Apex, the Peak City, and its roads
Apex calls itself the Peak City, with the motto “The Peak of Good Living”. It lies in Wake and Chatham counties, with Cary to the north and northeast, Holly Springs to the south and Raleigh to the east. US 1, US 64 and NC 55 are its main roads, a short stretch of NC 751 crosses the town limits, and the Apex Peakway loops round downtown, past the historic district around the 1914 Apex Union Depot.
The biggest change to Apex driving is the toll road. The southwestern section of the NC 540 Triangle Expressway runs through Apex, and the Complete 540 project begins at the NC 55 Bypass in Apex. Its first phase, about 18 miles to I-40 and US 70, opened on September 25, 2024, and the second phase toward Knightdale is scheduled to finish in 2028. New road, highway speeds and construction traffic are a reliable source of chips.
Tell Impex the car and the damage. Impex checks the glass against your VIN and comes back with a quote and a time.
What Impex can repair
A chip or a short crack is repaired by filling it with resin, which bonds the break so it stops spreading. The ROLAGS repair standard says stone breaks up to two inches across and single line cracks up to 14 inches are repairable. Impex’s own test is that damage which is small, shallow and away from the edges of the glass can usually be repaired, and that a chip smaller than a quarter is a good candidate.
- Usually repairable: a bullseye or star chip smaller than a quarter, away from the edge and out of the driver’s line of sight.
- Ask a technician: a single crack of several inches that does not reach the edge.
- Usually a replacement: a crack running to the edge, deep damage, or damage right in front of the driver.
If the damage is past repair, the same van does the replacement: see windshield replacement in Cary, which covers Apex on the same terms. The full guide to repairs, with the ROLAGS sizes in a table, is on the windshield repair in Cary page.
A mobile visit in Apex
Impex’s guidance is that a windshield repair is quick, often under 30 minutes, and there is nothing to cure and no camera to calibrate because the original glass stays in the car. That makes a repair easy to fit around an Apex day: in the driveway before work, in a workplace lot, or while the car is parked at home in the evening. Tell Impex where the car will be and for how long.
If the car is on a street or in a small lot downtown where there is little room to work round it, a driveway or a larger lot is easier. How the mobile visit works in general, including what happens on a wet day, is on the mobile windshield replacement page.
Other glass in Apex
The van in Apex handles more than chips: broken door windows (side window replacement), shattered rear windows (back glass replacement) and the camera calibration that follows a new windshield (ADAS camera calibration). For the full list of glass that is not the windshield, see auto glass repair in Cary.
Paying for a chip repair
A stone chip is a comprehensive claim in North Carolina: the NC Department of Insurance lists missiles or falling objects and breakage of glass among the losses comprehensive coverage pays, less any deductible. Impex’s insurance guide notes that many insurers waive the deductible for windshield chip repair. You choose who does the work under G.S. 58-3-180. See insurance claims.
